My Love of Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales grew out of a cherished childhood memory. When I was five or six years old, my mother gave me the most enchanting doll created from the blooms of a hollyhock. The doll’s beautiful ballgown was made from the layered pink petals of the flower. And the doll’s face and fancy headpiece were an unopened bud. It was Cinderella going to the ball. And to me, it was magic.

I don’t think I’ve passed another summer since then that I didn’t make a doll out of a flower from my garden. It always makes me smile and brings back the hot sticky summers of my youth, when I spent hours playing in my backyard and where boredom fueled imagination.

Now, as then, hanging out in my backyard among the flowers is my respite and my place to dream. It’s the place I decided to photograph what Cinderella would look like if she was a flower doll running from the castle. And it’s where I’ve created all my fairy tale scenarios from the flowers that I love and the magic that they inspire.

All my fairy tale flowers are photographed in miniature theatrical sets that I created. The images are not computer generated.
